According to recent survey data about manufacturing firms in the Third Federal Reserve District, the seasonally unadjusted diffusion index for inventories (share of CEOs seeing a future increase minus share forecasting a decrease) was 3.0 in October 2025, compared to -3.6 in September 2025.
Sample. There are 690 records in the monthly series shown in the figure above. The series covers the time span stretching from May 1968 to October 2025.
History. Here's a snapshot of a few statistics we computed on the whole sample: the diffusion index averaged -1.1; it reached its highest level of 41.0 in March 1972; it reached a minimum of -37.0 in February 1975.
