Based on a sample of manufacturing firms surveyd by the FED, the seasonally adjusted diffusion index for company outlook (share of CEOs seeing a future improvement minus share reporting a worsening) was 7.1 in October 2025, compared to 11.7 in September 2025.
Sample. There are 257 observations in the monthly time series displayed in the figure above. The time period covered by the series stretches from June 2004 to October 2025.
History. Here's a snapshot of a few descriptive statistics we computed on the entire sample: the diffusion index averaged 18.2; it recorded its maximum of 60.2 in November 2004; it reached its lowest level of -41.8 in April 2020.
